Wake Windows by Age: A Simple Chart From Newborn to 12 Months

A "wake window" is simply how long your baby is awake between sleeps. Get it roughly right and naps and bedtime tend to go smoother. Push it too long and you meet the overtired baby: wired, cranky and somehow harder to get down. Here's a simple chart, plus the most important rule: your baby is the real clock.

The short version

  • Wake windows grow from under an hour for newborns to 3 to 4 hours by 12 months.
  • They're a guide built from experience, not a strict scientific rule. Sleepy cues beat the clock.
  • Babies usually go from 4 to 5 naps down to 2 naps by around 9 to 12 months.

Wake windows by age

Age Wake window Naps per day
0 to 4 weeks 35 to 60 minutes Lots, often 4 to 6+
1 to 2 months 1 to 1.5 hours 4 to 5
3 to 4 months 1.25 to 2 hours 3 to 4
5 to 6 months 2 to 2.5 hours 3
7 to 8 months 2.5 to 3 hours 2 to 3
9 to 10 months 3 to 3.5 hours 2
11 to 12 months 3 to 4 hours 2

The window before bedtime is usually the longest of the day, and the first one after morning wake-up is often the shortest.

Sleepy cues to watch for

  • Staring off into space or looking away from you
  • Rubbing eyes, pulling ears or yawning
  • Getting quieter, then suddenly fussier
  • Red eyebrows or eyelids
  • Jerky movements or arching (often a sign you're a little late)

An honest note on wake windows

Wake windows come from the experience of sleep consultants and parents, not from big clinical trials, so think of them as a starting point. What doctors do agree on is total sleep: the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours for babies 4 to 12 months, naps included. If your baby is hitting roughly that, is happy when awake and growing well, you're in good shape even if your numbers don't match the chart.

Signs the window is off

Too short: your baby takes forever to fall asleep, chats or plays in the crib, or takes very short naps. Try adding 10 to 15 minutes. Too long: frantic crying at bedtime, early-morning wake-ups or catnaps. Try pulling sleep a little earlier.
